We would like to congratulate
Ms. Karen Walker, ASTEC Charter Middle School Science teacher for being accepted to the Oklahoma NASA Space Grant Consortium program.  Ms. Walker will be attending the Aerospace Education: Mission To Planet Earth 2009 for 11 days this summer at the University of Oklahoma.  We look forward to hearing all about her exciting opportunity!

Congratulations to Ms. Massey, ASTEC’s 6th grade Explore Teacher and Ms. Smith, ASTEC’s 6th grade Technology teacher for receiving the Target Field Trip Grant for $800.00.  Due to their hard work and dedication, Ms. Massey and Ms. Smith were able to take the 6th grade students to the Oklahoma Science Museum.

Also, congratulations to Mr. Jon Corea, ASTEC’s Art teacher for receiving a Target Field Trip Grant for $800.00.  This will be used in conjunction with the donation from the Chihuly Studios.  Mr. Corea and his student’s will visit the Oklahoma Museum of Art to view the glass exhibit of Dale Chihuly.

Gift Given to the ASTEC Art Department

The ASTEC Art Department recently received a generous gift from the Chihuly Studios.  Dale Chihuly is one of the most prolific, talented, and famous artists in the world.  He is a glass sculptor whose work can be found all over the world in museums, galleries, hotels, and major corporations.  The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is honored to house the world's largest permanent exhibit of Dale Chihuly's art.  Mr. Jon Corea, ASTEC's art teacher wrote Chihuly Studios to inquire the possibility of having one of the artists on the Chihuly team speak to his students via a web camera.  They quickly replied regretting that due to tight deadlines they were unable to grant the request at this time.  Instead they graciously donated a classroom set of Dale Chihuly's book, Team Chihuly.   With these books the students will be able to study Chihuly's art giving them the background knowledge they need before hopefully visiting the Oklahoma City Art Museum later this year.

Wes Welker, through his foundation (83 Foundation) http://www.83foundation.com/ has donated $8,000 to be used by the ASTEC Athletic Department for uniforms, tennis shoes, rental fees, referees, etc.

THANK YOU WES!

Wes Welker was born in Oklahoma City and attended Heritage Hall High School, where he played both running back and defensive back. He was named the Oklahoma Player of the Year as a senior by numerous media outlets and was an all-state choice as a running back. He is now enjoying a very successful career as a running back for the New England Patriots.

Jon Corea, ASTEC Art Teacher receives the Innovation in Education grant through Cox Communications.

The ASTEC art department is a recipient of the Innovation in Education grant through Cox Communications.  The award is for $5000.  The grant will be used to purchase art supplies.  This grant will initiate a platform for students to display their artwork in conjunction with the Oklahoma State of Creativity project.  The Oklahoma State of Creativity project is a project that showcases the large amount of creative talent that Oklahoma encompasses.  Students will take digital slides of their artwork and display their artwork on the website www.stateofcreativity.com. Each artwork will be for sell.  50% of the money the artwork is sold for will be put into an account that will be used to buy art supplies for future classes.  The remaining 50% of the money made will be given to the students.  This will be an exciting program that will highlight the amazing talent and hard work.
