General Information
The Role of the High School Counselor

A high school counselor's role in the education of a high school student is to guide and support each individual in the areas of academic achievement, social awareness, personal development and career development; helping to ensure that the teens of today become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.

Reminders
End of Instruction Testing Starts April 21

Beginning with students entering the ninth grade in 2008-2009, every student shall demonstrate mastery of the state academic content standards in the following subject areas in order to graduate from a public high school with a standard diploma:  ACE Algebra I, English II; and two of the following five:  ACE Algebra II, Biology I, ACE English III, ACE Geometry, and U.S. History.

To demonstrate mastery, the student shall attain at least a satisfactory score on the end-of-instruction criterion.  Students who do not attain at least a satisfactory score on any end-of-instruction test shall remediate and be given the opportunity to retake the test until at least a satisfactory score is attained.  Students who do not score at least at the satisfactory level shall be afforded the opportunity to retake each test up to three times each calendar year.  School districts shall report the student’s performance levels of satisfactory and above on the en-of-instruction assessments in order to graduate.  They are allowed to retake the test once and the higher of the two scores is recorded on their transcript.

ASTEC will begin end-of-instruction testing on April 21 and 22 with the English II and III writing tests, which are paper-pencil exams.  The multiple choice tests in English grammar as well as the remaining five subjects will begin on April 23 and will  extend through May 8.  IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS BE IN ATTENDANCE TO TAKE THEIR RESPECTIVE END-OF-INSTUCTION TESTS!  Please refrain from scheduling doctor or dentist appointments during this time.  It is essential that students eat a good breakfast prior to testing and be on time to their testing sessions.

ALL MULTIPLE CHOICE TESTS WILL BE TAKEN ONLINE!

We want our students to have the very best opportunity for success since these have become “high stakes” tests for them.  We will do our part to ensure the best possible testing environment.  You and your child can optimize their testing opportunity by making certain they get a good night’s rest, by maintaining their normal routine, and be having a positive attitude about the experience.  As always, we thank you for your continued support and encourage you to direct any questions you may have regarding testing to Donna McMillan, Counselor.
