Scholastic Book Fair May 4-8
ASTEC’s Scholastic Book Fair is May 4th through May 8th inside Shepherd Mall near Subway. Now is the time to stock up for summer reading at the Buy One, Get One FREE! Book Fair. For every item purchased, you’ll get a second item for FREE!
You will double your purchasing power and go home with twice the books! We also need parents to help work at the book fair. Please contact at 405-947-6273. The book fair is open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day and we will have a book fair family night on May 7th for families to attend after school/work.

Seventh Grade Leadership Performance at the Oklahoma Festival of the Arts 2009
Seventh Grade Leadership played their gig at the 2009 OKC Arts Festival! Along with Ms. Lisa Curl, the students performed on Tuesday, April 21st. They sang on the very popular Café Stage! They gave a fantastice performance. Ms. Curl was very proud!

Special thanks to all the parents and students who attended the Crystal Darkness Watch Party on Tuesday night. It was a great evening with a powerful message. More than 100 guests enjoyed a great dinner from Jersey Mike’s Subs and then discussed the film at the end of the evening. This was a great ASTEC community event and we appreciate everyone who came and supported it!

ASTEC Middle School Geography Bee Winners Announced
The Social Studies Department is pleased to announce the finalists and champion of the school level Geography Bee. Sixth graders Austin Fabian and Juan Ochoa, seventh graders Dario Ibarra and Nathan Larrinaga, and eighth graders Pamela Ortega, Ruthie Wantz, and Christian Payan all participated in the school wide competition. Third place goes to Pamela Ortega. Dario Ibarra took second place. Ruthie Wantz won first and will take a test to compete in the state competition. Congratulations and great jobs to all the Geo Whizzes at ASTEC!

18 ASTEC Middle School students attended the Tournament of Champions qualifier last Saturday at Jefferson Middle School. We are very proud of Ruthie Wantz who placed 1st in 8th grade Social Studies, Pamela Ortega who placed 3rd in 8th grade Current Events, and Yazmeen Knight who placed 2nd in 7th grade Current Events. These students will advance to the State competition in April. Special thanks to Ms. Smith for sponsoring this event and Mr. Eskew for driving the bus. We appreciate these students and teachers representing our school in a great way! Congratulations!

MATH LAB WEDNESDAYS
If your student is having trouble with a concept in mathematics, Ms. Owens will be available on Wednesday afternoons from 3:45 until 5:00 to help. This math lab is available to all middle school students. The student must make arrangements ahead of time so that their parents are informed if they are staying for after-school help. You may email Ms. Owens at iva.owens@astec-inc.org if you have any questions about the weekly math lab. You may also call 405-947-6273 and leave a message for Ms. Owens.
