8th Grade Team Teachers

Mrs. Iva Owens- 8th Grade Mathematics Teacher

Iva Owens
joined ASTEC, Inc. in August of 2006 as an eighth grade mathematics teacher.  She has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas and a master’s degree in business administration from Oklahoma City University.  Mrs. Owens has more than 15 years of teaching experience and is certified to teach secondary mathematics in Texas and Oklahoma.  Prior to coming to ASTEC, she taught mathematics in Oklahoma City Public Schools and Dallas Public Schools.  Mrs. Owens is ASTEC Charter Middle School’s 2008 Teacher of the Year.

Thanks to the generosity of ASTEC Charter Middle School, The Jordan Foundation, Best Buy Teacher Award and DonorsChoose.org, eighth grade math students have a more active role in the classroom and enjoy a mathematics experience strengthened by the use of responders or clickers, a SMART Board and graphing calculators.

Mr. Ryan Patterson - Eighth Grade Social Studies/Health

Ryan Patterson was raised in the small town of Burns Flat, Oklahoma.   While in school he spent his time buried in books, shooting baskets and fishing with friends.  He attended college at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.  After taking a writing class, he decided to major in journalism.  Following years of hard work on the university newspaper and student government, Ryan received two degrees; a B.A. in journalism and a B.A. in political science.   After college, Ryan spent several years working in print journalism as a beat writer, copy editor, columnist, designer, advertising executive and finally and currently as a freelance writer.

After a time, he decided to return to school and peruse his love of law and politics.  However, after subbing a few class for a former teacher he found that his true dream would be fulfilled in the classroom.  Ryan joined ASTEC in January of 2010 and is thrilled to return to share his passion for history with ASTEC students.  When Ryan is not at work he enjoys reading, playing music, organic gardening, camping and spending time with his lovely wife and five pets.

Ms. Viann Hughes- Eighth Grade English/Speech-Drama

Viann Hughes grew up in Searcy, Ar and attended ASU immediately after high school.  After receiving her A.A. in Business Management she put her education on hold to raise her family.  She has one daughter, Brandie, who is 25yr. old and lives in Lenexa, KS; and one son, Aaron, who is 19 yrs. old and attends Evangel College in Springfield, MO.

Viann went back to college in 1997 to work on a degree in education.  She graduated in 2000 from Hannibal LaGrange College in Hannibal, Missouri with a B.S. in Secondary English Education.  She then taught for 8 years in Kearney, Mo.  There she taught 9th and 10th grade English.  She moved to Oklahoma in 2008 where she taught English III, AP Literature and Composition and Speech.  Viannn is currently working on her Master's in English through Fort Hays State University in Hays, KS.

Mr. Danny Porter- 8th Grade Science Teacher

Danny Porter
was raised in Empire, a small township in southwest Oklahoma. He grew up in an Italian catholic household with his parents and four brothers.  While in school, Danny participated in numerous activities and clubs including baseball, wrestling, science club, key club, FCA, FFA, Band, vocal music, student council, academic bowl, and was also the president of his senior class.

After graduation, Mr. Porter left the comforts of home to attend Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.  There, he majored in Pre-med sciences and Secondary Science Education.  He was very active in the Catholic student association, Science educators club, OSU experience, high school diplomats, Horned lizard conservation society, Presidential leadership and various other organizations.  In December of 2002 he completed his degree in secondary science education with a concentration in pre-med biological sciences.

Danny joined the ASTEC team in August of 2007 as the 8th grade science teacher.  He resides in Mustang, Oklahoma.  Mr. Porter spends most of his free time taking part in outdoors activities including fishing, camping and hiking, but also enjoys cooking, karaoke (though somewhat lacking in ability) and spending time with family and friends.
